Mountaneering The high altitude and varied landscape of Bolivia make it one of the world's best terrains for mountaineering suitable for all abilities. There are four mountain ranges in Bolivia for climbing, with almost 1000 peaks over 15,404 ft (5,000 m). The most popular range is the Cordillera Real thanks largely to its accessibility from La Paz and its favorable weather conditions. The Cordillera Occidental is a volcanic area on the border with Chile which also offers some strenuous and not so strenuous climbs with breathtaking vistas in all direction. The Apolobamba in the northwest and the Quimza Cruz to the southeast are more remote. Huayna Potosí, probably the most popular climbing destination in Bolivia, is located about 15.52 miles (25 km) north of La Paz in the Cordillera Real. The ice-covered summit at 19,974 ft (6,088 m) is one of the most beautiful and well-known in the country. It is rarely affected by bad weather and the two-day climb to the peak is a challenging experience. The five peaks of Illimani 21,122 feet (6,438 mts) overlook the country's capital and offer a less demanding route although the altitude makes the climb difficult. The best time for mountaineering in Bolivia is between June and August when the conditions are most favorable, although the season actually runs from May to September. Recommend this site |
